Balloon cake toppers tutorial

12th March 2018

In this easy tutorial I’m going to show you how to create colourful balloon cake toppers using the cutters by FMM Sugarcraft.

These balloon cutters were included in February’s Birthday Party Edition and are perfect to decorate large celebration cakes and to make these fun cake toppers!

To make these you will need some sugar modelling paste in your desired colours (I used sugarflair gel colours; baby blue, primrose yellow, fuschia pink and mint green. You will also need florist wire which you can pick up in any good cake decorating store or craft store, paintbrush and edible glue.

First, roll out the sugar modelling paste to about 1mm thickness. You don’t what it to be too thick as you’ll be cutting out 2 of each balloon shape which you’ll be sandwiching together.

Cut out the balloons using the cutters. Lift the cutter then pop out!

Use the paintbrush to paint a little edible glue on to one of the balloons.

Place the florist wire on top of this balloon.

Then place the other balloon on top to sandwich the wire in between and leave to dry completely. I usually leave them over night so they are completely set and the glue is dry; otherwise you run the risk of the shapes sliding down the wires!

Make a variety of the balloon shapes in different colours and you’ll have a lovely selection of cake toppers perfect for a bright and colourful celebration cake!

To make these into a balloon spray you simply twist the bottom of the wires together and insert into a posey pick that you insert into the top of your cake!

You can make these in pastels, super bright or use edible lustre dust or spray in gold or silver for a more sophisticated celebration cake decoration!

As aways, don’t forget to share your cakes and bakes with us via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the #cakebagcreations tag. We would love to see what Birthday Party cakes you make using the contents of February’s Cake Bag!

Happy Baking!
