Mendhi lace domed cupcake toppers

22nd August 2019

August’s Indian Summer edition of Cake Bag is here! You’ve most likely had a couple of days to play with the products inside now.

Among the 6 beautiful and handy cake decorating items, contained inside this months tote bag complete with gorgeous design, you will have found a pack of PME sugarpaste:

Gold Lustre dust and an embossing mat by Ellam Sugarcraft.

These are the items I’m going to show you how to use in this tutorial post.

To make domed cupcake toppers, you’ll need foam ball halves (I picked mine up from purple cupcakes).

You’ll also need a large round cookie cutter the same diameter as the embossing mat, a small, fine paintbrush, a small paint pallet and some clear alcohol such as vodka or rejuvenator fluid to mix with the gold lustre dust to make a paint.

First, open the pack of PME sugarpaste (I received Regal Purple)

Roll out on your work surface lightly dusted with icing sugar to about 1-2mm thickness.

Place the sugarpaste onto the embossing mat and roll over the back in one direction, pressing down firmly so the icing picks up the design.

Gently peel the sugarpaste away from the mat to reveal the embossed design.

Lay this on your work surface and use the round cookie cutter to cut out a circle with the lace design in the middle.

Place the circles onto the foam ball halves and gently smooth down until fully moulded to the shape of the domes.

Leave to dry. Meanwhile, mix the gold lustre dust with clear alcohol or rejuvenator fluid to make a paint.

Paint onto the embossed Mendhi design. This really helps the design stand out and gives the cupcake toppers a beautiful finish!

Place the toppers on top of cupcakes piped with buttercream swirls. I baked these ones in gold cases to match the vintage gold painted design!

You can, of course, make the toppers using any colour fondant icing and lustre dusts or edible paints to match the theme of your event!

I love this combination of regal purple with the vintage gold!
